The Best Use of Our Freedom

July 4, 2017

Freedom. Liberty. Independence.

These are some of the values that this country was founded on. They were some of the dreams that our Founders had back in 1776 when they signed the Declaration of Independence.

Yet, it wasn’t simply ‘freedom to do whatever I want’.

That kind of freedom, if followed to it’s end, would lead to mob rule, and eventually, anarchy.

No, this ‘freedom’ that they were investing “our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor” for was a freedom with a purpose. These freedoms were founded on a core belief in a Creator–as THE Source of Freedom.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are live, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.

Our rights…our freedom…our liberty comes, ultimately, from God.

…and the difference that point makes becomes clear when we ‘throw off’ God’s influence and try to use our freedoms as we see fit.

John Adams wrote that “Our Constitution (and the rights detailed in it) is sufficient only for a moral or religious people; it is wholly inadequate for the government of any other“.

The Scriptures say “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD”. (Psalm 33:12)

True, that Scripture was addressed to Israel, however our Founders wanted it to be true of the United States of America also…they sought to welcome God’s presence and influence.

Now, we have become a people who have rejected God, for the most part…and our government shows the effects!

Political parties have now become about ‘getting our way’, and about ‘defeating the other side’ more than about the good of the country. We have now become a mud-slinging people, and our goal seems to be to have the best ‘tweet’ or the best ‘comeback’ to any of our opponents’ points…rather than government for the good of the people.

This did NOT start with our current President! Granted, it may be more extreme now, but this has been getting worse for some time…because (in my opinion) we have rejected the Lord for some time!

“When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild.
But whoever obeys the law is joyful.” (Proverbs 29:18)

Where will this journey end, if continued on like this?

Increasing hostility. Decreasing civility. Disaster.

What is the solution?

To humble ourselves again before the Lord, to seek His will, and to submit to His leadership.

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honor.” (James 4:10)

Will everyone follow suit? Of course not!

Will those who worship Jesus? I hope so! They should!

Really, that is our only hope for our nation–if the Church actually focuses again on ‘being’ The Church. Then, as God multiplies our influence, it may be that our nation can be saved from our headlong pursuit of self-destruction.

It is not about political party. It is certainly not about any specific politician!

It is about you, and I–individual Americans–following God.

That is the best use of our freedom!

Could We Do It Again? Would we?

June 6, 2014

D-Day.

June 6, 1944–the day on which approx. 160,000 Allied Troops landed on the shores of Normandy, France in a relentless effort to push Hitler and his troops out of France, and to take back Europe, standing against Fascism and tyranny.

At least 9,000 men lost their lives in the battle…in that battle alone. However, the Allies kept coming…wave after wave, they refused to give up. General Dwight Eisenhower reminded them that “Th eyes of the world were upon them”, and that they were part of a “Great crusade” for freedom and liberty.

Those men (18-22 years old) knew, when they jumped out of their Amphibious Assault Vehicles, that they may not make it. First, there were the 8 foot waves with 80 pounds of gear on their backs…then there was the relentless machine-gun-fire, then the mines, the obstacles…then the cliffs!

Yet, they kept coming.

Why?

Why not just turn around, go back home, and try to get comfortable in their lives again?

Why? Because liberty and freedom were under assualt! If the Nazis weren’t stopped there, they would never stop–after all, they believed they were the ‘chosen race’, and they wanted to wipe everyone else off the face of the earth (or at least to rule over them).

QUESTION:

Could we do this today? Would we?

In today’s culture, where instant media brings us graphic visions, do we have the stomach for war? Do we have the iron will that those men did–not only to speak out, not only to stand up, but to put their lives on the line–to stop evil?

There is still evil in the world, and all it takes is one person or one group with a big weapon who believes that they have the right to exterminate or dominate others to start something.

If that happens, will WE stand up? Will THIS generation rise to the occasion?

Today, President Obama declared June 6 a national remembrance day.

In a declaration Friday, he said, “Seventy years later, we pay tribute to the service members who secured a beachhead on an unforgiving shore — the patriots who, through their courage and sacrifice, changed the course of an entire century. Today, as we carry on the struggle for liberty and universal human rights, let us draw strength from a moment when free nations beat back the forces of oppression and gave new hope to the world.”

Good words.

I hope we still believe them.

Memorial Day Still Matters!

May 26, 2014

Memorial Day: What does it bring to mind?

For many of us, it’s cookouts, parades, and the ‘unofficial’ start to summer.

For many others, it brings back memories, heartache and pride…for the loved ones that have given their lives in service to this country.

Over the years, 1,312,612 people have given their lives in service to this country.

Why did they do it?

Some politicians would have us believe that they joined the service because they had no options left, and that it was a tragedy that they got caught up in something.

I refuse to believe that.

I believe that every man or woman who has put on that uniform of the U.S. Marines, The US Army, the US Air Force, the US Navy, the US Coast Guard have done so because they know that this country has something very special to fight for: Freedom! Liberty!

This country has been an exception to the rule of tyranny and subjugation over the history of mankind. In this country, each individual has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. In this country, we understand that the rights of the individual come from Almighty God, and not the government. Therefore, those rights cannot be taken away by our government–no matter how convincing the spokesperson is!

This country is The Example of freedom and liberty for the rest of the world! That did not come cheaply, nor will it be maintained easily!

On Memorial Day, we honor those who have invested themselves, sacrificed themselves, and given themselves totally for these freedoms.

May God bless the families of those who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice…and those who are in the midst of the sacrifice right now by serving! May they know that this country…the United States of America…is STILL worth serving and sacrificing for!

“We hold these truths to be self evident: That all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
