Generations                          December 18 Brian Drews

December 18, 2015

God is working, often behind the scenes.  If you’re not paying close attention, you might not even realize He’s there.

I consider myself blessed to have many sweet childhood memories of spending the holidays with extended family at my Grandma & Grandpa’s house.  So many aunts & uncles and cousins, all playing games, laughing, enjoying meals together and of course exchanging gifts.  I especially remember waking up on Christmas morning to the incredible mixed aroma of coffee brewing, sausage frying & biscuits baking (btw, Grandma was from Arkansas).  Christmas was always a little loud and crazy, but SO much fun!  I couldn’t wait for the season to come around again.

Fast-forward about 40 years.  Grandma and Grandpa are gone.  Two of my uncles are gone.  Most of my cousins are married and have kids, just like we do.  I can’t believe how fast time goes, and how life forces the kid in you to grow up.  But I know this world is temporary, and things change.  If nothing changed, I probably wouldn’t have grown.  I had no idea back then, but God was there behind the scenes, using my grandparents, my parents and others in my family to shape my character, to draw me closer to Him and to build my faith in Him.  He has since blessed me with an incredible wife and children that continually inspire me the choices they make and by how they live and love those around them.  He has placed us in a church with friends that really are family, some we’ve known for nearly 30 years!

So life is different now, but still so sweet.  While I miss those celebrations at Grandma’s house, I wouldn’t really want to go back even if I could.  They’re sweeter as memories.  Christmas traditions in this season of my life are… wait a second…

They’re about OUR kids spending time with THEIR grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins, creating sweet memories as they draw closer to God and grow stronger in their faith!

Huh.  I didn’t see that coming!

Read and Discuss:

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9; 20-25

Why was it important for parents in Israel to teach their kids about what their people had experienced?

Why are holiday traditions important to hand on?

How has God worked in your life, and why is that important to tell your kids about?

The Baby Changes Everything!

December 17, 2013

“I am the Lord’s servant” (Luke 1:38)

-It’s a great way for us to answer Him when He calls to us also!

The baby changed everything for Mary, but He’s still changing everything for us who get to know Him by faith.

Many of us have a ‘story’ of how we came to faith in Christ…how ‘I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see’.

Others grew up in the Church, being taught of the love, grace and beauty of God, and the wisdom of following Him and His Word from early in life.

You may not have a ‘dramatic’ story of conversion to faith.

None of that really matters.

What matters–for real–is the love you have for the Lord now. The willingness you have to love and serve Him, and to follow where He leads, investing in the priorities He leads you to.

Those are the things that will really matter!

Listen to Faith Hill’s beautiful song:

Consider and Discuss:

How did you come to know and believe in the Lord, Jesus Christ?

How has He influenced your life?

In what ways are you showing Him your love for Him and willingness to submit to Him in faith and trust–like Mary did?

Prayer focus:

Pray that the Lord would increase your faith and help you to say ‘yes’!
