Have you ever considered what kind of ‘legacy’ you’re living?
I said that correctly…What ‘legacy’ are you LIVING?
The reality is that most of us don’t think about the ‘legacy’ we’re leaving until we leave a job, retire, until our kids grow up and move away, or until someone dear to us dies.
And because we don’t think about it, we don’t concentrate on this fact: Your Legacy grows up out of your LIFE.
In other words, ‘How you are living’ will determine what ‘legacy’ you leave behind.
Be sure of this: You ARE leaving a legacy…whether you want to be or not.
What is the ‘legacy’ you’re leaving, based on how you’re living?
Not sure if you’ve heard, but Hugh Hefner died last night.
All due respect to Mr. Hefner and his family…I’m sure they’re grieving, and I pray for their comfort.
However, I heard him talked about on the radio this morning, and the newscaster was talking about the LEGACY Mr. Hefner left behind. Seriously?
The host interviewed someone…some ‘expert’ who spoke of Mr. Hefner’s ‘groundbreaking’ magazine, Playboy. Founded in 1953, it quickly gained notoriety as a ‘Gentlemen’s Lifestyle’ magazine. While it started out with pictures of women in bikini’s, etc., it quickly escalated into increasingly pornographic. Many credit Playboy (and Hefner) as helping launch the ‘sexual revolution’ of the 60’s and 70’s.
Hefner died at the age of 91, a multi-millionaire. From this world’s standpoint, many would regard him as a success. After all, he founded a very influential magazine, made tons of money, and had a very recognizable name.
What else is there, after all?
However, when one evaluates his legacy from a Biblical perspective, you find nothing more than self-centered narcissist who uses others–women in this case–for their own pleasure. Period.
Let me ask you: if you could evaluate his ‘legacy’ from God’s perspective, what do you think you’d end up with?
Certainly nothing good. Certainly nothing ‘Biblical’ or ‘Eternally significant’ (at least, not in a positive way).
And if our actions come from either God, This World, our Self, or Satan, where did his come from? Certainly not from God!
So, as we think about ‘legacy’, let me ask you: IF your legacy comes from how you live, what is your (current) legacy? Is it like Hefner’s–a ‘worldly’ success, but a spiritual failure?
Think about it: If you’re going to be remembered based on how you’ve lived to date, what is it going to be?
All about Money? Popularity? Looks? Work? Family? Service? Faith?
Is it time to turn it around?
If so, don’t wait!
May we all be able to say, with the Apostle Paul, “ As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
