Bowing…when do we do it?
Usually, when we’re being applauded for a job well done.
Maybe at the end of a play or performance of some kind…an awards dinner, perhaps.
Most of us don’t get to ‘Take A Bow’ very often in life…at least, not in that sense.
However, ALL of us ‘bow’ every day.
We bow in the sense that we give honor, allegiance, obedience and worship to…something!
What that ‘thing’ is makes a difference–a serious, profound, and ETERNAL one!
If the ‘thing’ that we bow to is anything other than the Lord, our God, we are guilty of an old-fashioned Bible word: Idolatry.
Think of the things we may ‘bow’ to, other than God: Materialism, Appetites of the flesh, the Opinions of others, the almighty dollar…there are no shortage of things!
However, the Lord is the only One who rightfully deserves this. HE is the one that we should be ‘bowing’ to daily, in Worship, Obedience, Love, Honor…
I think it’s long past time for the Church–those of us who claim to love and worship Jesus Christ–to admit, identify, and throw away our idols, then repent and turn to the Lord! After all, as the Psalmist writes,
“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not trust in an idol
or swear by a false god.” (Psalm 24:3-4)
We don’t want to ‘bow’ in the wrong way to the wrong thing.
We want to worship Him, and to seek Him, more and more each day.
The Psalmist continues…
“They will receive blessing from the Lord
and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face, God of Jacob.” (Psalm 24:5-6)
May WE be a generation which ‘Seeks His Face’ and worships HIM, above all!
