What is it about Christmastime?
This time of the year–more than any other–is a time that seems somehow…’special’.
This is a time when people–strangers even–treat each other with a little more grace, a bit more patience, and a few more smiles.
Why is that?
Why is it that this Christmas season effects us?
I believe it’s because Christmas is a taste.
It’s a hint.
It’s a breath of what awaits us when all of life is turned over to the care and control of God, through Jesus.
The Word of God tells us that “He has planted eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11), and that we have a ‘longing’ deep within for heaven.
“For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.” (2 Corinthians 5:1-2)
This means that all of us–young, old, religious, irreligious, Christian and even atheist–have that ache deep within. As one philosopher once said, “You have created us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” (Augustine of Hippo (354–430), in Confessions).
Therefore, this can give those of us who are believers in Jesus Christ more confidence and boldness–especially at this time of year–to share the GREAT news of Forgiveness, Salvation and New LIFE with those we come in contact with–because we know what they may not: They are thirsty for God!
Therefore, by all means, greet others warmly this Christmas! Don’t stop at saying ‘Merry Christmas’, however; rather, seek out opportunities to introduce them to Jesus. Invite them to Church…talk about your favorite Christmas Carol/Hymn…do something to point them to Jesus.
HE is why there’s ‘A Little Bit of Heaven Everywhere’.
Write down and share: Do you remember the first time that Christmas really ‘clicked’ for you personally? Has it been more meaningful since? Do you know people for whom Christmas is just a busy time of year?
Consider and Discuss: What is one thing that YOU can do to spread ‘A little bit of Heaven everywhere’ at this time of year?
Activity: Pray for opportunities to share about the ongoing reality of Jesus in your life.
